Rapids Riders Meeting

January 7, 2004

Safety and Ed Report

-Dennis summarized the ‘State of Paddling’ meeting he organized for the MCA.  People from all aspects of Minnesota paddling were there.  A very successful and interesting meeting.  A summary was posted on the forum and the MCA site.

-Canoe U registration form didn’t make it into the Jan/Feb Hut.  Registration opens on January 21, and the form can be found on our Training Page.

Treasurer’s Report

-Last year, we broke even on pool sessions

-our reserves are down from previous years levels

New Business

-With reserves down, there was a suggestion to reduce expenditures by discontinuing the reimbursement of ACA dues and fees for Rapids Riders instructors ($45/year/instructor).  Reimbursement has been done in the past as a reward for the time that instructors volunteer to teach.  The primary source of income for Rapids Riders is course tuition.  The item was tabled and will be voted upon at the February meeting.

-With a potential surplus of rolling sessions scheduled, there have been suggestions to reformat a few of the sessions.  It is possible that we may offer an intro/fun session to a group of scouts or community ed.  Watch the events page for current pool session formats.

-We discussed potential new venues for marketing our Canoe U courses.  With a goal of increased retention,

-If you have not sponsored a winter pool session and would like to help the club provide free open pool sessions to members, please make a payment at this time.

-In a proactive effort to provide an adequate supply of boats for Canoe U students, a proposal was made to have members loan their boats to the club so that the club could rent the boats to students for a modest fee.  Mike Jorgenson will survey members to determine if there are boats available for loan.  Lanny Freng will also check with a kayak rental operation in the region to see if they would be interested in providing rental boats.

-After discussing the costs and benefits of hosting the whitewater film festival and associate silent auction fundraiser, members in attendance voted to take a year off.
